Credit Wallets: The African Payment Model the West Is Missing

Every time a Western fintech product enters Africa, the same conversation happens internally: 'We'll support mobile money as a payment method, and credit cards for the rest.' What they miss is that for many African users, the preferred payment experience isn't a method — it's a model. And that model is prepaid credit.

Why prepaid is preferred, not just tolerated

Decades of prepaid mobile airtime have conditioned African consumers to a specific relationship with digital spending: top up a balance, spend from it, monitor what's left, top up again. This feels natural, transparent, and in-control. A monthly subscription that charges automatically feels like a loss of control over money — not a convenience.

For business customers, the accounting is also simpler: a single top-up transaction vs. many small recurring charges simplifies reconciliation, especially for businesses with strict expense controls.

SaaS companies in Africa that offer credit wallet top-ups alongside subscriptions report 23% higher payment completion rates and 31% lower churn among customers who choose the wallet option.

Building credit wallets with Xtopay

Xtopay's credit wallet system lets you create named credit packages — bundles of credits at a set price — that customers can purchase. Credits are then consumed as customers use your product. You define the consumption rate via the same meter API used for usage billing.

  • Create credit packages with custom prices and credit amounts (including bonus credits for larger bundles)
  • Customers purchase packages via hosted checkout or API
  • Credits are stored in the customer's wallet balance
  • Your application deducts credits as usage occurs via POST /credits/deduct
  • Low balance webhooks fire when a customer reaches a configurable threshold

Expiry, bonuses, and bundles

Xtopay supports optional credit expiry (after a set period or inactivity), promotional bonus credits (e.g. buy 100, get 110), and bundle tiers. These mechanics are proven to drive top-up frequency and reduce churn in prepaid models.
